Yaala Sparkling and CommBank partner to bring native flavours to more Australians

As demand for native botanicals and bush foods rises, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander businesses remain underrepresented in this growing sector. Yaala Sparkling, a locally owned beverage brand, is committed to changing this narrative.

Founded in 2023 by proud Wiradjuri woman Tara Croker, Yaala Sparkling showcases authentic native botanicals that honour ancient ingredients and knowledge. Its unique use of native ingredients – known to Indigenous peoples for generations – has been welcomed by consumers looking for a product committed to sustainable practices and social impact.

When Tara noticed non-Indigenous businesses incorporating native plant knowledge into their products, she discovered that Indigenous representation in the native food supply chain was less than 2%. Determined to address this gap, she launched Yaala Sparkling offering all-natural, authentically branded beverages.

Yaala Sparkling’s innovative blends include Lemon Myrtle and Native Blossom, Davidson Plum and Waratah, as well as the recent additions of Desert Lime and River Mint, and Quandong and Native Ginger. Each beverage celebrates storytelling and a deep connection to nature through native plants, which are known for their health and well-being properties. For instance, Dhabugarra Mugilbang (Lemon Myrtle) is believed to evoke joy, reduce pain and promote a sense of calm.

CommBank quickly recognised the power of Yaala’s story, its innovative approach and commitment to female-led Indigenous entrepreneurship. Understanding the importance of this unique narrative, CommBank has forged a meaningful, long-term partnership with Yaala Sparkling.

The outcome

This collaboration goes beyond a transactional relationship, embracing an Indigenous perspective on business. CommBank has creatively identified new opportunities, and integrated the products into ongoing initiatives, such as events, marketing activations, staff rewards and office cafes.

“CommBank acknowledges the important leadership role Indigenous businesses play in the native foods industry,” said Simone Kenmore, Executive Manager of Indigenous Business Banking at CommBank. “Our Indigenous Business Banking specialisation proudly supports businesses that use traditional practices of wild harvesting for sustainable production of world-class products and produce.”

“Our partnership with Yaala Sparkling is exciting; beyond the refreshing, sugar-free, native botanical sparkling water, we know we are supporting Indigenous entrepreneurship, employment, strengthening culture and showcasing native foods,” Simone added.

Tara Croker, Founder of Yaala Sparkling, shared, “Yaala Sparkling is devoted to making vibrant beverages that honour the true flavours our Ancestors have enjoyed for generations. We believe in sustainable growth, from the plants we use to our business practice. We work with Indigenous wild harvesters and local farmers to create healthy beverages with benefits.”

“Indigenous-owned businesses often start with a collective, sustainable and community-driven approach,” Tara continued. “For me, this is more than a drink – it represents participation, equity and self-determination.”

In its early stages, Yaala Sparkling has already achieved remarkable milestones, including a successful pitch on Shark Tank and accolades such as the 2023 First Nations Bush Food Alliance Award for Excellence in Marketing and Cultural Storytelling, 2024 Small Business Champion, and Brand of the Year.

There are more than 5,000 suppliers listed on Supply Nation’s Indigenous Business Direct database, with around a third owned or led by women.

Yaala Sparkling’s strong focus on innovation and storytelling, combined with sustainable practices, positions their brand and the wider Indigenous business sector for continued success.
