The Australian: Kevin Rudd boosts indigenous jobs

BIG business has credited Kevin Rudd with sparking an upsurge in corporate efforts to reduce indigenous disadvantage.

A new report by the Business Council of Australia, to be released today, says the nation's biggest companies are embracing the view that they have a social responsibility to lift indigenous employment.

The report attributes the interest partly to the Prime Minister's emotional apology to the indigenous stolen generations early last year, and to his promises of multi-billion-dollar spending to close the gap in living standards between indigenous and non-indigenous Australia through better housing and education.

Last October the BCA backed Mr Rudd's push to bring indigenous Australians into mainstream society through employment and education, committing to do its part and report annually on its progress.
