Registration and Certification

Registration on Indigenous Business Direct is the first step for any Indigenous business wanting to work with Supply Nation. To be registered, your business must be at least 50% Indigenous owned and based in Australia.

After registering, if your business is eligible for Certification, you will then be contacted by Supply Nation to progress the certification process.

Certification

An Indigenous business that is majority owned, controlled and managed by Aboriginal people or Torres Strait Islanders is eligible to become a Supply Nation Certified Supplier.

Certification criteria

To be eligible for Supply Nation certification, the business must be:

  • At least 51% owned by Indigenous Australian(s)
  • Led and/ or managed by a Principal Executive Officer who is an Indigenous Australian
  • Controlled by an Indigenous Australian with whom rests the key business decisions regarding the company’s finances, operations, personnel and strategy
  • For profit – the company is not a registered charity and the company generates the majority of its revenue by providing goods or services
  • Trading as a business with a minimum annual revenue of $50,000.00 or a demonstrated recent history of trade (ideally, at least 6 months’ trade history)
  • Located in Australia

Get Certified

The five steps in the certification process are:

Step 1: Register on Indigenous Business Direct

Step 2: Indicate your interest in certification during this application. You will be sent an email containing further information and a Certification application form.

Step 3: Submit the completed application form with all supporting documentation to certification@supplynation.org.au.

Supporting documentation required:

  • Current financial information. This can include any of the following: previous year’s company income tax statement, 6 months of Business Activity Statements (BAS),  or 6 months of Profit and Loss statements (P/L)
  • Insurances related to the business
  • Company constitution, partnership agreement, or trust deed (this is dependent on the structure of the business and may not be applicable)

Please note: until these documents are received, applications can not be processed. 

Supply Nation will assess the application and contact you to arrange to complete the process.

Step 4: Site visit

The Supply Nation certification team may need to visit your primary place of business to validate the information you have provided. We will discuss this with you to arrange an appropriate time.  

Step 5: After a final assessment of your application we will contact you to notify you of the outcome.

The Supply Nation approach to confirmation of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent

Supply Nation recognises and appreciates the different positions held by members of the community on what documentation adequately constitutes confirmation of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent. Recently Supply Nation began to recognise two distinct categories of Indigenous Businesses:

  • Certified Suppliers, which are 51% Indigenous owned, managed and controlled, and
  • Registered Suppliers, which are 50% Indigenous owned.

As part of the new online registration process, registrants are asked to upload confirmation of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent for every Indigenous owner of the business.

There are two different types of confirmation that Supply Nation recognises:

  • a Confirmation of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent provided by a recognised institution, or
  • a binding statutory declaration.

Confirmation provided by a recognised institution

For the purposes of the verification process, a recognised Indigenous organisation means one of the following:

  • Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander land and/or sea councils,
  • Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander medical centres,
  • Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander legal services,
  • Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait  Islander organisations registered with ORIC, or
  • Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander community justice group.

Other organisations may be accepted by Supply Nation as a recognised Indigenous organisations on a case by case basis. Please contact us if you have confirmation from another organisation.

Statutory declaration

The Supply Nation confirmation form was introduced in order to streamline the registration process for Indigenous people who own a business but do not have a traditional confirmation of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent. By signing the form, the signatory is confirming they are Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander as it is understood by the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Act 2005, which states that in order to be recognised as Indigenous, a person:

  • Is of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent, or both
  • Identifies as an Aboriginal person or Torres Strait Islander, or both and
  • Is recognised as such by his or her community.

The form must also include the details of two references from a recognised Indigenous organisation or another organisation that is deemed by Supply Nation to have the public standing and credibility to attest to the veracity of an individual’s claim to be of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent.

This form is a legally binding statutory declaration, and false or misleading statements are punishable under section 136 of the Criminal Code Act 1995 (Cth) and section 11 of the Statutory Declarations Act 1959 (Cth).

Because the statutory declaration is legally binding, Supply Nation believes that it, in combination with our other verification checks, is adequate proof of Indigenous descent.

Audit and verification program

Supply Nation has a detailed auditing process in place for Registered Businesses and Certified Suppliers to ensure the continuing ownership of the business by verified Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander owners. 

Any feedback that indicates suspicion of the Indigenous status of a company registered on Indigenous Business Direct will be thoroughly investigated by Supply Nation. Where it is concluded that false information has been provided, the business will be removed from the site.
